{"id":9868,"date":"2018-06-12T16:01:32","date_gmt":"2018-06-12T16:01:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/firerescuefitness.com\/?p=9868"},"modified":"2020-09-07T02:50:06","modified_gmt":"2020-09-07T02:50:06","slug":"how-to-reduce-obesity-in-firefighters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firerescuefitness.com\/2018\/06\/how-to-reduce-obesity-in-firefighters\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Reduce Obesity in Firefighters&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><strong><u>This is scary&#8230;We need to change.<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GpQqWVYI8sc\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor;\">Rates of overweight and obese individuals in the fire service are higher than those found in the general public, according to a new study.\u00a0 Researchers looked at the body composition of both career and volunteer firefighters across the nation, with overweight and obesity rates ranging from 73 percent to 88 percent.\u00a0 About two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese on a general, national level.\u00a0\u00a0 The research demonstrates that a large percentage of firefighters do not meet minimal standards of physical fitness, according to the study conducted by the NVFC <strong>National Volunteer Fire Council&#8211;<\/strong> &#8220;Addressing the Epidemic of Obesity in the United States Fire Service&#8221; looks at the impact of obesity, the scope of obesity in the fire service, and why obesity has become an epidemic.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor; overflow: visible;\">\n<table style=\"float: right; text-align: right; height: 19px; width: 5px;\" width=\"11\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center; width: 1.2px;\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center; width: 1.2px;\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor;\">The report also adds that &#8220;as firefighters gain more weight, <em>research has found that cardio\u00a0<\/em><em>respiratory fitness plummets and the risk of cardiovascular disease increases.<\/em>&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0&#8220;There is solid evidence that suggests physical fitness is related to job performance and the performance of simulated firefighting tasks (e.g., hose and ladder carry, donning SCBA, climbing three flights of stairs, rescue and body drag, etc.). &#8220;The fact that so many firefighters are not fit is troubling. This situation may be at least partially due to lack of agreement over fitness and body composition standards in the fire service and the fact that few departments engage in regular monitoring of body composition and physical fitness in their firefighters.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor;\">\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor;\">The research found that occupational factors may place firefighters at high risk for weight gain, including:<\/div>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor;\">\u2022 Shift work<\/div>\n<div style=\"border: currentColor;\">\u2022 Sleep disruption<br \/>\n\u2022 Unhealthy eating patterns in the firehouse<br \/>\n\u2022 The absence of fitness standards for firefighters<\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>This report should urge everyone from national fire service leadership, to department chiefs, to individual firefighters to think creatively and join in efforts to reverse the negative trends of unhealthy body weight and poor physical fitness.\u00a0 Now is the time to begin a national conversation regarding obesity in the fire service.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>We as Firefighters, EMTs, and Paramedic&#8217;s need to start changing our unhealthy culture around the firehouse.\u00a0 Instead of grabbing a sugary treat like a cookie or cake, we need to reach for something healthy.\u00a0 We as Fire Rescue Athletes must also start to act like athletes and remember that food is a fuel that allows us to more efficiently and SAFELY perform our duties.<\/p>\n<p>Among the recommendations the report makes for the fire service to combat obesity and increase fitness are:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2022 Fire departments should require annual fitness assessments and physicals\/ cancer screens.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u2022 Minimal fitness recommendations for all firefighters should be a priority.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u2022 An effective fitness program and education should be implemented by fire departments.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>I will also add that firehouses need to start building a more fit and healthy culture.\u00a0 Nutrition also plays a huge role in the obesity epidemic.\u00a0 Cooks need to at least (at a minimum) offer salads and healthy alternatives at each meal.\u00a0 \u00a0 Firefighters need to think about their nutrition like an athlete and eat to perform (reduce sugars, stay hydrated, eat healthy proteins and eat a lot of fruits and veggies).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Finally, don&#8217;t wait for your department to start a fitness program.\u00a0 Take the initiative, find a program that will help you improve performance and help you get to a manageable weight.<\/p>\n<p>Let me know how I can help you get more &#8220;fit for duty.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>-Aaron Zamzow<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">&#8220;The time for action is now.
