{"id":18410,"date":"2025-01-27T10:00:52","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T16:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/firerescuefitness.com\/?p=18410"},"modified":"2025-01-28T05:59:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-28T11:59:00","slug":"improve-first-responder-fitness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/firerescuefitness.com\/2025\/01\/improve-first-responder-fitness\/","title":{"rendered":"The Five Steps Every First Responder Must Take to Improve Their Functional Fitness"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<h2>\n\t\t\t\t\tImprove your first responder\n\t\t\t\tPreview text\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t    and perform better on and off the fire\/rescue scene. \n\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t<p>We all want to (or should) improve our health and fitness.\u00a0 \u00a0Year after year, it has become the most popular resolution.\u00a0 \u00a0 As a first responder, you should always strive to improve your health and fitness and\/or maintain it.\u00a0 \u00a0 If you don&#8217;t believe me, pick up any trade journal and read the health and wellness research.\u00a0 We, as first responders, have higher rates of cancers, obesity, diabetes, heart conditions, and injuries than the general population.\u00a0 We also are more likely to suffer from mental health issues.\u00a0 \u00a0 We all need to understand that we need to take care of ourselves so we can better serve others.<\/p>\n<p>So,\u00a0 this brings me to the question:\u00a0 &#8220;How are you doing with your fitness and health goals?&#8221;\u00a0 Many people have great intentions at the beginning of the year, but then, &#8220;life&#8221; takes over, and we fall off track.\u00a0 \u00a0You are not alone; this happens to me (more than I want to admit) even though I am supposed to be the expert.\u00a0 We all face challenges when it comes to managing our fitness.\u00a0 The good news is that it can be easier than you think with some simple planning and strategy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/firerescuefitness.com\/frf-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"https:\/\/podcasters.spotify.com\/pod\/show\/getfrf\/episodes\/What-to-do-if-no-one-wants-to-workout-and-get-fit-e1ctqlt\/a-a77ulrm noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firerescuefitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/just-dont-quit.png?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Improve first responder functional fitness podcast\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If one of your goals is to get leaner, stronger, and more fit for duty, keep reading.\u00a0 \u00a0I have been fortunate to help thousands of first responders (including myself..lol) over the last 12+ years by following these simple five steps.\u00a0 Yes, there is more to them, which I will address in later posts, but this will give you a clear process to follow.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are five steps you need to take to make fitness progress this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>1.\u00a0 Lose your excuses<\/u><\/strong><u>.<\/u> \u00a0I like to call this step &#8220;cleaning out the junk.&#8221; We all have a lot of junk and excuses in our heads that sabotage our fitness.\u00a0 I understand because I have them myself.\u00a0 Regarding fitness and health, it is easy to start comparing yourself to others, looking around for better workouts and the best diets.\u00a0 I think in a lot of cases, we search for the solution harder than we work on the solution itself.\u00a0 So, this year, get all the junk out of your head.\u00a0 This is your journey.\u00a0 Be honest with where you are currently and set a realistic goal.\u00a0 You can lose 10 pounds this year, you can get stronger and leaner, and you can have a healthier year.\u00a0 We all have them; stop letting them stand in your way. Lose your excuses and decide to commit to your fitness.\u00a0 The more fit and healthy you are, the better firefighter, EMT, medic, and\/or parent you will be!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firerescuefitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/take-care-of-yourself-1.png?resize=300%2C251&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By cleaning out the junk, I also mean cleaning out all the foods that sabotage your fitness progress.\u00a0 Get them out of your house, lose the high-sugar, high-fat foods, and replace them with some fruits, vegetables, and healthy options.\u00a0 Out of sight and out of mind.\u00a0 If you have kids, stop using them as an excuse.\u00a0 We all should be eating healthier!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>2.\u00a0 Get\/ create a plan.<\/u><\/strong> \u00a0This is where most people fail. \u00a0Do not just start working out by doing the &#8220;workout of the day&#8221; or your &#8220;buddy&#8217;s&#8221; plan. Or even worse, do not go back to the &#8220;old routine&#8221; that you used to always do.\u00a0 We all have exercises and a routine we gravitate toward because we are comfortable with them.\u00a0 Get out of your comfort zone and train differently.\u00a0 If you have been doing the typical chest and triceps, legs, and abs routines, change it up and train more like a fire rescue athlete!\u00a0 Challenging your body in new ways can help maximize your progress. Make sure you prepare your meals, watch for added sugars, hydrate, and mind your portions. And one of the best ways to stay on track is to plan a cheat meal each week.\u00a0 This will help you avoid burnout.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firerescuefitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/Dont-ever-diet...-Just-eat-according-to-your-goals._.png?resize=300%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nutrition and eating healthily can also be overwhelming!\u00a0 There are so many diets and plans on the market; how do you know where to begin?\u00a0 Start with the basics.\u00a0 Focus on hydration; drink at least 70 ounces of water a day.\u00a0 \u00a0Then add some vegetables; aim to eat at least 5 servings a day.\u00a0 These two steps will help you clean up 70% of your nutrition.\u00a0 The last part of this is to start reading labels and noting serving sizes.\u00a0 \u00a0If you understand and figure out what you are currently eating, it is a lot easier to make some simple changes to make improvements.\u00a0 Every <a href=\"https:\/\/firerescuefitness.com\/workouts\/\">FRF program<\/a> has &#8220;how-to&#8221; guides that help you break down nutrition and healthy eating into actionable steps.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>4.\u00a0 Get support<\/u><\/strong><u>.<\/u> One of the best ways to ensure success is to surround yourself with like-minded individuals.\u00a0 Tell your family, friends, and crew about your fitness goals.\u00a0 Challenge those around you to join your quest for better health and fitness.\u00a0 I think you will be surprised at the support you will get.\u00a0 This will also make it easy to follow better nutrition if everyone is eating healthily.\u00a0 \u00a0Start to educate yourself on the basics of healthy eating and fitness and talk to others about their experiences.\u00a0 We are in this together.\u00a0 One of the benefits of following an <a href=\"https:\/\/firerescuefitness.com\/workouts\/\">FRF workout program<\/a> is that you get access to thousands of other first responders who are doing the same thing.\u00a0 Our FRF crew is filled with motivation and inspiring stories.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/firerescuefitness.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/join-the-crew-1.png?resize=600%2C464&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"464\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>5.\u00a0 Execute your plan.<\/u><\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0This is the hard step.
