In the early 80’s, I was the Fitness Coordinator for a large police department.
It was obvious that police and fire had unique health concerns from the job.
Several studies have shown that a retired police officer, and I’m sure fire fighters are the same, have a life expectancy on average, 10 years less than regular citizens. Large study out of Buffalo.
In those days, it was simply work out and then workout harder.
I fell victim to that way of thinking and consumed 6,000 calories daily (mostly carbs) as I trained for the Hawaii Ironman in 1982.
30 years later, many of us became pre-diabetic from the carbo loading, which was a must for those doing ultra events in those days.
If I may, I’d like to add a few pointers to your article on changes that I believe would assist your program.
* I have cut out seed oils (vegetable oils) as they throw off the balance of Omega 3 | 6’s and promote Inflammation. I bet the kitchens in the FireHalls are full of seed oils – vegetable oils.
* Have your fire fighters check their CRP – Inflammation levels on their next yearly checkup – also their blood sugar – A1C.
* Look into Intermittent Fasting and check out Dr. Jason Fung.
* For cardio try HIIT – high intensity interval training. It sves time and you get the best cardio results.
* Older firefighters may have their family doctors recommend Statins. The test they use will recommend it to almost everyone over 55. Studies in Europe show that those over 60 with high cholesterol, live longer and healthier than those with lower cholesterol.
Stay well and keep up the good work.
Ron
